A HUB SUCCESS STORY

Vega Manufacturing

Manufactured for sustainability.

VEGA Americas is continually looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, and one of the most visible opportunities is improving how they manage waste generated through manufacturing.

As VEGA recently expanded their production capabilities to include electronics manufacturing, they introduced a new plastic waste stream that cannot be recycled through traditional curbside or mixed recycling programs. Partnering with Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub provided an effective and timely solution. The Hub’s Corporate Services team helped to identify the type of various plastic materials being generated, developed collection processes, and created collection bins and clear signage to support employee participation.

“While this production area is still growing, we have already established a system for collecting and staging these materials for recycling through the Hub's pickup service,” said Matt Graft, Sustainability Manager at VEGA Americas. “As production reaches full capacity, we will already have processes in place to divert this material from the landfill, and the Hub’s team of diversion experts that we can reach out to with questions about different types of material that we may generate in the future.”

“As a result of these efforts, we have reduced the volume of waste sent to landfill and have already been able to decrease the frequency of our standard dumpster service.”

Beyond these specialized plastics, the Hub also expanded VEGA’s recycling efforts for common but hard-to-recycle materials such as plastic film, bags, pallet wrap, styrofoam, and other foam packaging materials. Implementing separation processes for these waste streams requires attention to detail, and the Hub educated VEGA’s staff about those processes. Our ongoing advising, detailed contamination reports, and continuous support help VEGA to continually improve their waste diversion performance.

As a result of these efforts, VEGA has reduced the volume of waste sent to landfill and has already decreased the frequency of their standard dumpster service. The Hub's collection reporting also provides accurate material weights for each pickup, giving better visibility into waste streams and more reliable sustainability data. These measurements contribute directly to VEGA’s landfill diversion tracking, putting them on pace to exceed their goal of diverting a minimum of 55% of all waste generated.
