Battery Management

The Hub: Experts at battery safety and recycling.

No battery should be disposed of in traditional household waste. Lithium batteries, in particular, are extremely dangerous fire hazards when stored or disposed of improperly. Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub is a leader in battery safety and recycling and can implement and maintain Battery Management Programs for your organization. One such program is in partnership with Rumpke Waste & Recycling—Cincinnati’s primary waste solutions provider. In this program, the Hub utilizes and trains local fire stations (per D.O.T. compliance) to serve as free resident lithium battery drop-offs to minimize fires in Rumpke trucks and facilities. Residents can also bring in their lithium batteries to the Hub for free! (Traditional alkaline batteries cost $1/pound to recycle at the Hub.)

In a five-year study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 25,000 lithium-ion battery fires were reported. The yearly cost of commercial lithium battery fires in the U.S. is $15.9 billion dollars.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: Rumpke Waste & Recycling

LIthium battery fire station drop-offs.

Lithium batteries result in 1.2 billion dollars of fire-related damages to waste and recycling facilities in the U.S. To prevent that damage locally, the Hub has worked with Rumpke Waste & Recycling to curb lithium-ion battery fires in their facilities and trucks. To accomplish that, the Hub enlists local fire houses to be free residential drop-of points and then trains the station crew on proper storage practices. Since starting in 2023, the program has grown to 15 fire stations and diverted more than 1,200 pounds lithium batteries from the landfill. Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky residents can use any of the locations below for responsible disposal of their lithium-ion batteries.

NOTE: Only drop off lithium-ion batteries. No other batteries are accepted (alkaline, car, etc.)

“The Covington Fire Department is proud to partner with the Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub to help our community safely dispose of lithium batteries. Through this partnership, we’re providing residents with a safe and responsible way to discard old or damaged lithium batteries.”
