OUR MISSION
Why waste diversion is critical.
Our team is passionate about the preservation of our resources and diverting waste. We stress reducing consumption, reusing items, and, lastly, recycling materials. These efforts are essential for building healthy communities and mitigating climate change. We are actively decreasing the toxic effects of the improper disposal of materials — improving air, water, and overall quality of life in the Greater Cincinnati community and beyond. Local impact.
Our local landfill covers 230 acres (the 6th largest in the U.S.) and is the highest point in the Greater Cincinnati area. A recent study of the landfill composition showed that nearly 70% of the waste should have been diverted. The Hub staff works hard every day to provide solutions for hard-to-recycle items (20%), to educate the public about curbside recycling (17%), and to provide partnering composting services (31%).

The plastic crisis.
Would you believe half of today’s U.S. population was alive at a time (the 1960s) when plastics weren’t commonly used? And yet, today, plastics are ubiquitous. Nearly 30 million tons of plastic waste goes into U.S. landfills every year. These plastics squander resources, leach forever chemicals, create emissions, and shed microplastics that pollute our water and air—creating an unhealthy environment for us all. A primary role of the Hub is to serve as an outlet for rigid plastics and flexible films in order to reduce the amount of these materials in landfills and use these resources to maintain a circular economy.

The meteoric rise of e-waste.
Did you know that there are more mobile phones than people in the world? Astonishingly, in 2022 there were over 8.58 billion mobile subscriptions, compared to a global population of 7.95 billion. The world is inundated with electronics and, therefore, electronic waste. At the Hub, e-waste is one of our primary focuses and we accept most electronics in any condition for a minimal fee. Those items are then either repaired, disassembled for parts, or recycled with responsible downstream partners.
